brunoise (broo-NWAHZ) - v., to dice (vegetables) very finely, usually to the dimensions of 2 mm or less. n., vegetables cut this way.

The smallest of dice cuts, done by julienning and then cutting at a 90-degree angle to the julienne. Sometimes specifically a mixture of leeks, celery, carrots and sometimes turnips chopped this way. Can be part of making mirepoix but more commonly to create a garnish.

This month is almost over, so, let's hear it. *g* How did it go with your fannish creativity?

Did you manage to make a thing?

Created fanart or made vids? Wrote fic or meta? How about picspams, link collections, character mood boards, themed playlists, promo posts, or whatever else you create for fannish enjoyment?

Here's the place to share it with us! Leave a link in the comments, or elaborate on it as much as you want.

mirepoix (mir-PWAH) - n., a mixture of diced vegetables, such as carrots, celery, and onions, plus herbs, and sometimes ham or bacon cooked at low heat in oil or butter.

Mirepoix is the flavor base for many dishes in French cooking (much as sauteed or stir-fried onions are in mine). It is named after Gaston-Pierre-Charles de Lévis-Lomagne, duc de Mirepoix (1699–1757), whose name is often shortened to Gaston de Lévis, duc de Mirepoix, an ambassador of Louis XV, but exactly what his connection is, dictionaries don't mention, and I'm too tired this morning to dig further.

Reading and laughing

I went to bed at a reasonable time yesterday evening and started a new book with delighted anticipation. "Reading time! I'll get to fall asleep peacefully with my brain tummy full of stories <3" I thought. The way my tbr pile works is that I add recs to my library queue and most of the time by the time the book gets to me 1) I've completely forgotten what it was about and 2) there's a good chance I'll enjoy it because I did add it based on a rec that intrigued me to start with.

To set the scene further: in winter, the cat often climbs onto my stomach while I read because the blankets are thicker and fluffier.

ALAS! The book I started was Skye Falling by Mia McKenzie!!! I'm only about 70 pages in AND I LAUGHED SO HARD!! SO HARD!!!! Poor cat quickly abandoned me since it must have felt like a rodeo machine thing up there, but I was nearly crying and my non-existent abs were aching by the time I stopped reading.

Not the most restful way to fall asleep, I'll be honest. But oh my god. As much as I sometimes wince with some of her specific choices, Skye's internal voice is just. Just. Incredible. I'm not finished yet so no spoilers please :D But I'm fairly sure I picked up the rec from someone here so thank you to whoever mentioned it on their journal :D Wow. Like I laugh and cry and gasp often when reading, but I can't remember the last time I was non-stop guffawing like this from a book.

Edit: Finished the book and I stand by my rec! (The cat had to endure another round of stomach rodeo but I'm sure given time she will find it in her generous (?) heart to forgive me.) The book jacket says the story is about the complexities of family, queerness, race, and community. Definitely! It felt like a love letter to Philadelphia as well (I've never been). Impeccable narrator voice. Black queer woman protag. Many excellent relationships between women. And did I mention how much I laughed? I did. Though it doesn't mean the story isn't poignant or painful, sometimes even while laughing.

I just snagged the Humble Bundle quilting and embroidery bundle, 17 books on quilting (mostly with precuts), crazy quilting, sashiko and embroidery. I bought it because I wanted Purr-fect Patchwork, which is worth more than the whole bundle itself, but I'm excited to check out most of the titles.

The bundle is about $US20 (I see it in my own currency) and is available for the next 17 days.

Humble have also just released a knitting bundle, $US20 for 17 knitting books available for the next 10 days.

chiffonade (shif-uh-NAYD, shif-uh-NAHD) - n., leafy vegetables or herbs cut into fine, curly strips.

Generally used as a garnish, but also sometimes as the bed for a dish. Created by rolling leaves then slicing perpendicular to the roll, thus the curl. From French, from either chiffonner, to crumple, from chiffon, scrap/rag, or directly from chiffon, which in turn is from Middle French chiffe, from Old French chipe, rag, from Middle English chippe, chip/shard/fragment, from Old English ċipp, chip/splinter/shaving, from Germanic roots, ultimately from PIE *ǵeyb-, to split/sprout. Making this one of those rare cases where a word went from Middle English to Old French instead of the other way around.
